It fairytale Newmark had everything but the happy ending.
For 50 years, she wanted to wear the glass slipper of a published author. Then his dream came true in a big way - a publishing contract of millions of dollars with a major publisher - and she became too sick to enjoy it.
Newmark, 65, died at his home in Valley Center a week ago, after a two-year battle with acute respiratory distress syndrome. Her husband, daughter, son and sister were at his bedside.
By most accounts, including hers, she's dead grateful.
"You ask me the feeling I will have a primary at the end of my life is gratitude," she told the Union-Tribune in April when his novel "The sandal tree 'has been published. "I had a charmed life as far as I'm concerned.
